Techniques

Straight cut

A continuation of one shot to another in the same place and at the same time. 

Dissolve 

Dissolve - A dissolve is when the first clip starts to disappear, and the second image gradually appears.

Wipes

This transition happens when one shot replaces the other from a specific direction or with a specific shape.

Long takes

This is also called a continuous shot which duration is much long than the conventional editing pace

J-cut 

The sound of a shot or scene play before the next shot even though it's no longer matches the video

Cut-ins

A Cut-Ins is when the transition is from a wide shot to a closeup to show an object or even a person in greater detail (1:41)

Cross-Cutting

The sound of a shot or scene plays before the next shot does. (6:03)

Match On Action

The sound of a shot or scene plays before the next shot does. (2:03)

Reaction shot

This shot cuts away from the main scene in order to see the character's facial expressions/reactions (0.34)

Establishing shot 

Extreme long shot or long shot that is used in a beginning of a film or video to establish an overview of the scene that follows

180-degree rule

Having a straight angle so that the camera will be able to fit the brother of characters

Graphic Match

The first and second shots share the same shapes, colors and composition (0:46)

Slow motion 

This is an edit that allows the video to go slower than normal (0:25)

Flashback

Narrative technique of interrupting the
chronological sequence of events to interject events of earlier occurrence

Fades

Fades - A transition that allows a clip to be faded out in either black or white. - 2:12

Washes

Washes - A wash is close to a fade however slightly different because it uses solid colors to start the transition instead of using black. E.g., Used when a character faints or ascends to heaven.

Quick cuts

This transition is when it goes from one shot to the next shot without any effects.

Elliptical Editing 

Used when they want to condense and shorten the clips to provide more interesting finished video

Eyeline match

This is used for indicating to the audience what a character is seeing.

Shot/Reverse shot

This is a technique that involves two characters in the same scenes who are filmed separately using different camera angles (1:33)

Parallel editing

Separate scenarios are mixed together to present a plot from many viewpoints in a video editing method used in post-production. (0:49)

30-Degree Rule

The camera should move at least 30 degrees relative to the subject between successive shots of the same subject

Jump cut

This is normally used when you show the passage of time (0.30)

Freeze Frame 

An individual picture produced by stopping the film or videotape at that point

Split screen

A frame that is divided into discrete non overlapping images (0:40)

Flash forward

A scene that temporarily takes the narrative forward in time from the current point of the story in a film
